Magical Sequences and beginner Teachers!

Magical Sequences and beginner Teachers!

The secret still remains!

How to create a sequence of moves? How to teach it? What is really necessary for a sequence to be useful for the students? What abilities should a good teacher have?

In terms of Argentine Tango, a sequence is a combination of such simple elements as different steps or moves. So far there is no new information.

In my opinion, as well as that of other teachers, these combinations are key to transmit and show the essence, the secret, that unnoticeable touch that makes your dance unique, this, of course remains unnoticed in the eyes of those who are not prepared to see it, in other words, in the eyes of beginner teachers.

However, do not panic! There is certainly a solution to that, and we, experienced teachers will help you.

The secret is giving a sense to your dance and avoid the myth of creating a cult about certain moves, especially when referring to this kind of dance which has very precise features.

A sequence of moves is the tiniest expression of sense in our dance. Once and again I see both teachers and dancers fall in the trap of an empty step / move. Most of them dance without going a little further into the move. Sometimes, they combine moves which are exactly the opposite and do not match one with the other. In other cases, they are like a gun shooting against the floor or their own partner Some others, teach exercises or moves which do not really focus on the main objective, i.e, that the student is able to dance!

A good teacher is always simple and precise and he does not need to show anything…

What should a sequence of moves have in order to be magical ?

  • precise moves
  • sense of dynamics
  • a beginning, a development, an end
  • a musical structure
  • a sense of aesthetics
  • a unique idea of tension and relaxation
  • simplicity
  • connection between music-partner and place

What should we consider to create and teach a magical sequence of moves?

  • what we want to teach, not more than one or two moves is the best.
  • The level of the student and his most urgent needs
  • How to simplify the sequence to its minimum expressions
  • How to dance that sequence and connect it to other parts of the dance
  • How to discover the sense and musicality of that sequence
  • How to create new moves taking into account tension and relaxation of the body
  • How to use an example so that each student learns to give sense to his own moves and sequences
  • The excess of moves shows that we are in front of a beginner teacher. Lack of details shows that we are in front of an intuitive teacher. Precise details show that we are in front of a master.

Some people can achieve all this intuitively, however, they might encounter some problems when the time comes to teach and explain the moves. I know these mistakes very well as I have learnt from them because I have certainly made them myself.

Regardless of your level, it is important that you take classes, continue to learn and share a wonderful moment with both your teachers and students.

Have a nice Tango!
